BOSTON JUNIOR TRIP 2017

This year, 11 members of our Junior class were able to take a memorable weekend trip to Boston.  A tremendous college town, we were able to visit 4 spectacular colleges, and enjoy many of the sights that Boston had to offer.

Harvard is the oldest institution of higher education in the United States, established in 1636 by vote of the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.  Harvard's motto is "Veritas" which is Latin for truth.  Among the numerous alumni are past presidents such as Barack Obama (and his wife Michelle), George W. Bush, John F. Kennedy, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, and John Adams; other politicians such as Al Gore, Al Franken, and Ted Kennedy; notable historians such as W. E. B DuBois and Helen Keller; astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson; entrepreneurs such as Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerburg; actors such as Natalie Portman, Matt Damon, and Tommy Lee Jones; model/actress Tyra Banks; and TV Personality Conan O'Brien.

HARVARD UNIVERSITY

University of Massachusetts - Boston

University of Massachusetts Boston was established in 1964, expanding the only public university to two locations (Boston and Amhurst).  Notable alumni of UMass Boston are:  UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) President Dana White, Nobel Prize in Chemistry winner Roderick MacKinnon, Politician Joseph Kennedy II, Novelist D. Harlan Wilson, Co-founder of Twitter "Biz" Stone, and Poet/Writer Eileen Myles.

Tufts University

Established in 1852, Tufts University in Medford, MA is one of 4 campuses including Talloires, France (!).  Probably the most interesting part of Tufts is its mascot, Jumbo the elephant.  Jumbo was originally part of the famous Barnum & Bailey circus.  Upon Jumbo's death, P. T. Barnum, a benefactor to the college, donated the stuffed hide in 1885.  Students, parents, and visitors believed that Jumbo was good luck.  Unfortunately, Jumbo was destroyed in an electrical fire in 1974, but some of his ashes remain in the athletic director's office in a peanut butter jar.  Notable alumni of Tufts are:  Actors Hank Azaria, Oliver Platt, and William Hurt; TV Personality Meredith Vieira; 4-time James Beard Award winning Chef Rozanne Gold; Former Chief-of-Staff to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Author Lord Michael Dobbs; and Red Sox Hall of Fame Pitcher and Dentist Dr. James Lonborg.

Boston University

Established in 1839 as the Newbury Biblical Institute, Boston University has a rich history.  The first study abroad program was introduced in 1875, BU was the first to open all of its majors to women in 1867, one of the first black law graduates and female law graduates were from BU in 1877 and 1881 respectively.  More recently, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. received his doctorate degree from BU in 1955. To date, BU has over 33,000 undergraduate and graduate students from more than 130 countries, nearly 10,000 faculty and staff, 17 schools and colleges, and 250 fields of study.  Notable alumni include:  Actress/Comedianne Rosie O'Donnell, Political Talk Show Host Bill O'Reilly, Actress Marisa Tomei, Activist Joan Baez, Producer Andy Cohen, Author/Writer Mary Elizabeth "Tipper" Gore, and Publicist Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.
